By using the cloud, organizations save millions of dollars that would otherwise be spent building and maintaining the physical facilities.

Better technology can help the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue keep track of scams and warn consumers. This is a copy of a phony letter being sent out to Pennsylvanians that has led Department of Revenue's Acting Secretary Pat Browne to warn people about so they don't fall prey to the scam.

It’s no reflection on the quality or dedication of public sector IT professionals to acknowledge that government often lags behind the private sector in adopting new technologies. The realities of how government does business – competitive bidding; short, frequent budget cycles and regular changes in executive leaders – combine to create rules that the constantly-evolving world of technology doesn’t ever really feel inclined to play by.

The key issue between where we are and where we need to be is where the data lives. The days of governments keeping their data on-site in their own servers is over. It’s too expensive, doesn’t allow for expansion, isn’t secure and makes upgrading too hard. No similar-sized private company would be permitted to do likewise by an IT leader worth their salt. Pennsylvania has increasingly been tapping cloud-based solutions for its state IT projects and that direction needs to continue.

The benefits of moving systems and data to the cloud range from the ease of upgrades to better security and resilience. The result are systems that serve the public faster, with the latest technology and are there when they want them.
