Foreign Minister Penny Wong has condemned China for unleashing a barrage of ballistic missiles towards Taiwan and Japan following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s historic visit.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong said China’s decision to escalate military action by firing high-powered missiles towards Taiwan and Japanese owned islands is a “serious matter for the region.”Beijing launched the several days of military drills in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s historic visit to the self-ruled island of Taiwan on Tuesday.
“Five of the nine ballistic missiles launched by China are believed to have landed within Japan’s EEZ,” Japanese Defence Minister Mr Nobuo Kishi told reporters on Thursday. Japan’s EEZ extends to around 370kms from the mainland, with Japanese owned Yaeyama Islands located only 96 kilometers from Taiwan.
Senator Wong said she has expressed her concerns about Beijing's “deeply” concerning and “destabilising” actions to her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Friday.
