Everything you need to know about Pension Credit and how to apply
Times are hard at the moment and those living on a state pension will be feeling the pinch of rises in the cost of living. While earlier this month State Pension payments increased by 10.1 per cent, it is still estimated that over 1.8million pensioners have an income of less than £100 per week, according to a report.
Ms Morrissey explained: “The new State Pension has done much to boost the financial resilience of women in retirement and close the gap with men. This is great news but the comparison between what women receive on the new and basic rate pension systems is stark - on average more than £18 per week. Some 1.4million older people are currently in receipt of the so-called ‘passport’ benefit which in turn is providing additional financial support for 1.6million pensioners and their spouses or partners.
People can check their eligibility for Pension Credit using the online calculator here or by calling the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234. Mixed aged older couples and Pension Credit In May 2019, the law changed so that a ‘mixed age couple’ - a couple where one partner is of State Pension age and the other is under it - are considered to be a ‘working age’ couple when checking entitlement to means-tested benefits.
