After some ratepayers received huge water bills despite not using the water, concerns are being raised about water security.
When Verlene Johnston's family received an excess water bill for $10,000, their first response was to laugh it off.Ballina Shire Council can not explain what happened to 3 million litres of water they initially believed had been used by a pensionerThe drought is creating a new frontier in water management says a councillor
The bill showed the north coast New South Wales resident had used 3 million litres of water over a three-month period — enough to fill the local Olympic swimming pool twice over."From a $50 quarterly bill to a $10,000 bill was just laughable, we thought it would just go away."In the end, the process to get the bill waived took five months and many sleepless nights for the 83-year-old pensioner.
The family called in a plumber to check for leaks and agreed to pay for the cost of having the water meter tested should it turn out to be faulty. One theory they offered was that Ms Johnston was a victim of water theft, by way of someone swapping her water meter.
