The Pentagon’s special Defense Innovation Unit, run by a former Apple executive, has awarded an Australian company a $20 million boat building contract.

| The Pentagon’s special Defense Innovation Unit has awarded Australian boat builder The Whiskey Project Group, backed by homegrown investment managers Ellerston and Perennial, a $US12.5 million contract to deliver boats for American Marines in the Pacific.

Military boat builder Darren Schuback has been in the US winning contracts and preparing for expansion.Announcing the award at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC alongside Ambassador Kevin Rudd, TWPG founder and chief executive Darren Schuback said the award was a good sign for future Australian defence contractors in the US.

“From day one, The Whiskey Project Group’s mission was to redefine tactical watercraft and create a new generation of safer, completely networked, combat-ready platforms, based on our own naval special operations experience.”The boats are unique in their ability to integrate cutting-edge communications and sensor information. They can also carry special payloads and have unique safety features.

On Thursday Mr Rudd signalled the need for Australian superannuation funds to fund defence investments such as TWPG. “Part of our challenge is to introduce the Australian superannuation industry into investible categories in the defence science and technology space,” Mr Rudd said.
