The US Department of Defense has been secretly funding numerous popular TV shows and YouTube personalities to boost military recruitment . A Pentagon report revealed that the department spent $1.9 billion between July 2023 and June 2024 on traditional and digital recruitment and advertising efforts. Funding agreements like production assistance agreements (PAAs), first approved by the Pentagon , have been used to support shows like The Kelly Clarkson Show and YouTuber MrBeast.
The report highlights the Pentagon's strategy of using social media and digital platforms to engage with young people and promote positive perceptions of the military. However, the military's use of TikTok, a popular platform among younger generations, is prohibited due to its links to Chinese investors. The report also notes a decline in favorable views of the military among Gen Z, with only 35% holding positive opinions since 2021.
