WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson warns of a bad batch of illicit drugs being sold in Perth following dozens of overdoses last week, including three fatalities on Saturday.

Commissioner Dawson said it was clear there had been a bad batch or batches of drugs going around the Perth area and people needed to be very cautious.

"When you're getting over 20 [overdoses] a day, that is telling me that there is a bad batch of something, or it could be a combination of matters," he said. "In whatever substance people take illicit drugs — whether it be injecting, snorting, smoking or taking pills — you cannot ever know what the purity is or what indeed are the ingredients," he said.

"I've been to so-called drug labs, where it's buckets and barrels with garden hoses in them— there's no quality control, they don't care about the users, they care about making money out of misery and the deaths and the injuries that occur."Commissioner Dawson said he could not remember a time in recent history when Perth had seen three fatal overdoses in one day — such occurrences had been more common 20 or 30 years ago when heroin use was rife.
