The death toll is rising following the devastating Cyclone Idai, which has so far killed hundreds of people in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Beira, a low-lying city of 500,000 people, is home to Mozambique's second-largest port and serves as a gateway to landlocked countries in the region.

According to the Red Cross, the cyclone has damaged or destroyed 90 per cent of Beira, Mozambique's second largest city and a major port hub. "Some dams have yielded while others have reached full capacity. Much of the country remains inaccessible due to flooding."
