The months and years that have passed have done little to lessen the pain for many people who fled Afghanistan. It's particularly acute for people who are yet to be reunited with loved ones they had to leave behind.

He said his evacuation experience progressed incredibly quickly. He received an email from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on August 12, three days before the fall of Kabul. Mr Azizi said while he escaped the chaos of Afghanistan, he still faces daily challenges in trying to adapt to a new environment and find a job.
"People who apply as a refugee are forced to apply. Ordinary people are not migrating — it is the urban educated, the workforce who cannot find space for them in the new government under the Taliban," he said.
