Windrush migrants came to the UK after the Second World War when they were invited by the British government to help rebuild Britain.
A new campaign group believe there are thousands of people across Merseyside impacted by the Windrush scandal who are entitled to justice and compensation.
LAW also offers person-centred trauma counselling, free administrative services and expert advice on the Windrush Compensation Scheme . This group came to the UK after the Second World War - many of them having served in the British armed forces - when they were invited to emigrate by the UK government to help ‘rebuild Britain’.
In particular, the Windrush generation was asked to come to Britain and address post-war labour shortages as the country invested in huge infrastructure projects and public services. They had a vital role in the success of the NHS are credited with helping it become one of the most respected health care systems in the world
These interventions saw a significant tightening of documentation checks for people from the Windrush generation. However, it emerged in 2018 the Home Office had kept no historic records of those granted permission to stay and failed to issue the required to confirm their status. LAW are now searching for victims of the Windrush scandal and have conducted a survey which suggests thousands of people across the Liverpool City Region are eligible for some form of compensation from the Windrush Compensation Scheme.
There is no closing date for applications and covers a ‘range of categories’ - it is also open to close family members of Windrush migrants and covers people who came from 1948 to 1988.
