Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has called on Brits to reduce their energy usage in defiance of Russian president Vladimir Putin ‘blackmailing’ the nation.

As MPs scrutinised his Autumn Statement, Mr Hunt told the Teasurety Committee yesterday that people must ‘take responsibility’ for their energy bills.Households would save £500 on their heating bills if the public ‘plays their part’ by following government advice to keep costs down, Mr Hunt claimed.

Though, while Ms Truss vowed to freeze gas and electricity rates for two years, Mr Hunt said he will bring this to a screeching halt in April.Russia’s war against Ukraine sent countless countries scrambling for fuel as prices soared ‘But for most people, we need you to play your part in reducing our energy dependency.’

‘Because it is a national mission to make sure that we can’t be blackmailed by people like Putin when they do things that interrupt international energy supplies.’ He said the government is ‘offering to help people save’ £500, a figure chalked up at current gas prices, with the cost-cutting tips.After April, gas prices are expected to soar to upwards of £3,000, a substantial leap from the £2,500 cap, energy analysts at‘We’re going to need everyone to help us crack this problem if we’re not going to have a huge additional burden on taxpayers,’ Mr Hunt said.
