'Most of us are technically sleep deprived. It's the norm.' Young people are not getting enough sleep, leading to calls for more research on whether to start secondary schools later

Year 11 student Moe is a lark but even he would welcome school starting a little later.

Children aged five to 13 should get nine to 11 hours of sleep, the Department of Health recommends. For adolescents aged 14 to 17, the recommendation is eight to 10 hours. On average, 16- and 17-year-olds go to sleep at 10.15pm on school nights and between 11 and 11.30 on non-school nights. One secondary principal, who declined to be named, said given the research about adolescence and sleep patterns "it would be good if school hours could be pushed back"."I consulted with my community about this last year. There are many societal pressures that prevent this: after-school activities and sports are an impediment, and secondary school students are used as pick-up and drop-off for younger siblings and so primary schools would need to align with any changes in time.
