People are playing the generational lottery with their retirement savings accounts

One worker, who does all of the right things, works and saves a large part of her wages during her careers could ultimately retire very comfortably, while another, doing the same things, could struggle to make ends meet, just because of a difference in age. Welcome to the generational lottery.

Saving money in a retirement account comes with several risks. There is the chance of making unlucky or unwise financial decisions such as investing in a company’s stocks where the risks are not fully disclosed. Think about the people who put a lot of savings in Enron stock in 1999 or mortgage banks in 2007. There is also the chance of outliving one’s savings. And there is the chance of simply being born at the wrong time, as we’ll discuss below.
