Local youths were blamed for topplimg headstones at a cemetery in Scarborough but now the council have admitted they pushed over the headstones to conduct safety tests.
A local authority has sparked fury among residents for toppling at least hundreds of headstones because they were deemed ‘dangerous’.
Cemeteries widely carry out safety checks on memorials to stop prevent injuries from heavy objects falling on visitors. But photos shared by residents on social media suggest the tests have been carried out with an extreme level of vigour, with up to half of all stones laid down in some areas. As many as half of headstones had been torn down in some places
Government guidelines also state families should be contacted if their loved ones’ graves are disturbed. The council claims it ‘gave people plenty of notice’ through letters, signs and social media posts starting in early June.
