Moto GP: Championship leader Jorge Martin crashed out in his home GP in Spain, while Bagnaia took out a dramatic win.
Dateline: Madrid, February 2024. An invitation-only crowd of 600 people cram into a downtown concert hall to see the unveiling of the new livery for Honda’s factory MotoGP squad, celebrating the 30th anniversary of one of motorsport’s most recognisable paint schemes .
In MotoGP’s constructors’ championship, where points are allocated to the highest-placed finisher for each manufacturer in every sprint race and Grand Prix proper, Honda has scrounged 13 points to be a distant fifth of the five brands competing in MotoGP; fellow Japanese struggler Yamaha sits fourth, but with more than double that tally .Marquez on bounce-backs, podiums and MotoGP title chances
“I could enjoy a bit, fighting for the ‘Japanese Cup’, even leading the ‘Japanese Cup’! Then I started to push, I opened a gap of one second and I killed the tyre.Mir is Honda’s highest-placed rider after four rounds - in 16th place in the championship. Honda’s horror show is part of a wider decline of the performance of the Japanese manufacturers relative to their European counterparts in modern-day MotoGP, which would have been unthinkable as recently as three years ago.
Ducati’s ever-evolving bikes, on the other hand, looked like a hybrid between fighter jets and F1 cars – and seemingly different every weekend. While Honda employed MotoGP’s cheat code in Marquez, though, it could paper over the cracks. The pandemic played its part, too. With lockdowns and freedom of movement in Asia generally and Japan specifically more strict than in Europe, the Japanese factories had their manufacturing and developmental pathways periodically paused or regularly restricted while a truncated, but still operational, championship continued across 14 rounds and in front of empty grandstands in Europe.
Just four races into his time at Ducati, Marquez finished on the podium in Spain. MotoGP’s series organiser Dorna, perhaps skittish that Honda could go as far as withdrawing from the championship as fellow Japanese brand Suzuki did in 2022, revamped its manufacturer concessions for 2024 in an attempt to level the playing field, and water-down Ducati’s dominance after the Italian brand won 29 of the 40 Grands Prix in 2022-23, and had Francesco Bagnaia annex both championships.
