NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has announced a buyback and land swap scheme for some disaster-ravaged areas following an inquiry into deadly flooding in February and March.

Four residents died in the floods that hit south-eastern Queensland and northern NSW twice over late February and March of this year.Mr Perrottet acknowledged poor coordination of the response effort compounded the devastation in the community after the flood. On Wednesday, Mr Perrottet said the government would adopt every one of the Fuller-O’Kane report’s recommendations, starting with a plan to establish a dedicated reconstruction agency.The government will also restructure Resilience NSW and rename it Recovery NSW.
The size and scope of the NSW program would dwarf the Grantham scheme, which came after catastrophic and deadly flooding in 2011 claimed 12 lives. The weather pattern which brought persistent rains and floods to the east coast during late 2021 and early 2022 has triggered flooding in eastern states in 12 of the 19 years it has occurred since 1900.The average rainfall from December to March in La Nina years is 20 per cent higher than the long-term average.
