When the state’s peak union body thundered earlier this year that workers would strike as often as it took to secure a better wage deal, the Perrottet government saw it as a gift. That threat from Unions NSW boss Mark Morey happened to be plastered acrossMinisters have referenced the front page story ever since, bellowing: “See, we told you, the union bosses are boasting about causing mass chaos.
Teachers, nurses and paramedics have walked off the job more than once, while one of the longest running disputes – with the rail unions – has emerged as the litmus test for whether the Perrottet regime can end industrial action without a bloody battle. The key sticking point with the rail unions is the $2.8 billion intercity train fleet, which is gathering dust in storage while workers refuse to staff it until modifications are made.
It didn’t go quite to plan. The government stumbled at its first legal hurdle and failed to secure interim orders from the commission preventing industrial action across the rail network on Wednesday. A full hearing on Thursday will be pivotal – and not just in the rail dispute.
