NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet is seeking advice on the status of thousands of COVID-19 fines amid calls for the state government to scrap the remaining penalties.that were issued since the start of the pandemic after conceding in the Supreme Court they were not valid.A separate 29,000 fines for different offences remain active, although Perrottet on Sunday told the“I’ll have a look at that. I think everyone knows what my views are in relation to fines,” Perrottet said.
Fines were handed out for penalties including failing to wear a mask, not complying with public health requirements and leaving the metropolitan Sydney area when the government imposed strict LGA lockdowns.Steven Siewert “There’s a real potential that all those other fines may be caught up in the judgment in the new year, so why not give people a Christmas bonus and withdraw them now?” she said.Lee represented several plaintiffs who brought a test case to the Supreme Court this year, arguing certain fines were invalid because they did not adequately describe the alleged offence, as required under the Fines Act.
“Now the premier has an opportunity to right that wrong. He should drop any COVID lockdown fines and any enforcement actions. It’s nearly Christmas and people are doing it tough.”
