I’m not as confident as you that the squirrel will give up when cold weather sets in. It might redouble its efforts, seeking a warm, dry spot.
There are a couple of things you can try. Hanging shiny objects that will move in the wind and reflect light is a good deterrent. You can use old CDs, ribbons of reflective tape or shiny Mylar balloons, as long as you anchor them so they don’t blow away in the wind. You also can buy effigies of owls and other raptors. These usually aren’t long-lasting deterrents unless you move them frequently to convince the squirrel they are a threat.
