The Coalition has accused the government of duck-shoving accountability for its pledge to keep the community safe.

Already a subscriber?Anthony Albanese has taken aim at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and the recently appointed Community Protection Board, as the government seeks to distance itself from last week’s alleged bashing of an elderly Perth couple by a non-citizen released from immigration detention.

“If it was up to me, I assure you that there wouldn’t have been bail granted in that case. But these things are done independently by the Director of Public Prosecutions,” Mr Albanese said.“I honestly don’t know why the federal prosecutor, who admittedly is independent, so I’ll probably get in trouble for saying this, but why on earth didn’t the federal prosecutor oppose bail?” he said.

Mr Albanese will be in Perth next week for yet another visit to a state that is critical to Labor’s re-election prospects.
