Every year hundreds of Aboriginal kids are being inspired to aim for greatness, thanks to a one-of-its-kind workshop program aimed at getting more mob to finish high school.

Deadly Dreaming is a unique set of in-school workshops aimed at encouraging Aboriginal youth to engage in higher education.School has finished for the day but a group of Aboriginal students are still in the classroom, the girls clearly enjoying themselves with smiles and laughter all around.

"When we get them to look at the stereotypes that we face as Black fellas – like we're non-educated, alcoholics, or we're violent – it's overcoming those stereotypes and seeing the light shine in their eyes that we aren't what society thinks we are," workshop facilitator Jacob Wehr-Murphy said. The success of this approach shows in the students' responses when asked to share their dreams.

"We're not trying to sell them something, we're just telling them the truth, and we're opening the door for them to either step in if they want or don't," she said. "I'm the first one to go to uni in my family and want to be the first one to get through, sort of set that pathway for my little sister."
