When Ebony Jones received a phone call from the daughter of a friend saying her father was bashing her mum, she got straight in her car and went to help protect them.
In January last year, Ebony Jones was at home when she received a call from a friend's daughter, saying she was being attacked by her partner.
"The fear in this little girl's voice was just heartbreaking I just kept on having these thoughts of, 'What if I don't get there in time?'" Now looking back, the single mother acknowledges she put her life at risk, but says she would do it again in a heartbeat."I just knew that I had one job and that was to get there and to make sure that those kids were safe and my girlfriend was OK."This week, Ms Jones was awarded a commendation for brave conduct for her actions that night.
While she was grateful for the recognition, Ms Jones said she had initially struggled to accept the award."Obviously I did a lot, and I helped a lot, but I just feel like it was something so natural for me to do that I don't feel like it's that big of a deal," she said. The single mother, who is a domestic violence survivor herself, said she often downplayed her achievements and rarely gave herself credit for the things she did for people.
"I think domestic violence has risen so much over the last few years, and there's so many more women who are finding the courage to speak up and to ask for help, but there's so many women who don't, and they sit there and suffer in silence," she said."But then it does hit you sometimes and it does get you a little bit emotional because it is a lot.
