Perth Zoo's two beloved Asian elephants, Permai and Putra Mas, are preparing to leave for their forever home at Monarto Safari Park in South Australia."It's a bittersweet moment to lose elephants from Perth Zoo," Perth Zoo life sciences director John Lemon said. The elephants have been undergoing crate training for over a year.
"But we know it's the best thing for the elephants based on welfare for them to go to their forever home." The elephants have been undergoing crate training for over a year, practising daily in borrowed containers to ensure their comfort and safety during the long journey. On Wednesday, the custom-made four-tonne transport crates that will be used for the 2500-kilometre journey arrived at the zoo, complete with multiple doors, a fruit chute for treats, a water trough, a hay net, and a unique false bottom with a litter tray underneath."It's all about the welfare of the elephant so we need to make sure they're safe and secure in these crates for the long journey ahead," Lemon said.
Perth Zoo aims to have Permai and Putra Mas settled in their new home by June next year, but they won't be moved until they're comfortable in the crates.
