Jennifer and Maxine Gamble are sisters who have bought a house together to future-proof aged care issues that might arise in the future for them.
In this series, The Australian Financial Review chats to a recent home buyer about where they bought and why – as well as the practical details, such as how much the property cost, if they got what they wanted, and just how hard the process was – to give readers a taste ofWe have been living together for 13 years.
Last year, we wanted to move to a home that could accommodate our needs when we age, as we’ve seen people leave it until it’s too late. Then the cost of moving for their mental health is just too high because it’sto make friends who can help unless you’re in a community. And as you get older, you’re just more confined to your home, so we wanted to find a place that would be suitable for us when we get to that stage.
But within about a month, the property market went completely nuts. What we saw were properties priced over $1 million that were shoe boxes on major roads. It was all very depressing and real estate agents were always trying to get us in bidding wars, which was why we employed buyer’s agent Ben Lamers to navigate it for us.Thankfully, we ended up buying a two-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Joondalup – 26 kilometres north of Perth’s CBD – not long after hiring Ben at the end of last year.
Ben helped us get in before there was an open home, which meant we had time to look around the house. My blood pressure went down as it meant we had enough time to see whether this house was right for us – which it was. We’re really fortunate, as from looking around, similar homes are now going for $940,000. The market just isn’t slowing down. It’s single level, has bathrooms for each of us and enough room for our menagerie – two dogs and three cats.
And for retirees like us, what we wanted to do was to ensure we didn’t pay more than what we gained from the sale of our house. We didn’t want to get stressed from the new home eating into our super, which is not a good idea. The biggest problem in Perth is that everyone always says if you buy in the same market as you sell then you will be OK.
