The Western Australia government wants to bring an NRL double-header – potentially a season opener – to Perth’s Optus Stadium next year as attempts to take the grand final interstate ramp up.

Sources with knowledge of the situation have told theand that the WA government wants to stage another double-header in Perth, like the one that marked the opening of Optus Stadium in 2018. On that occasion, the venue hosted round one clashes between South Sydney and the Warriors, followed by a Bulldogs-Storm encounter.
The WA government is prepared to pay to make the move financially rewarding for the NRL and its clubs. The NRL has also flagged the prospect of taking a game, likely involving Manly and South Sydney, to the United States next year in a bid to grow the code and cash in on the explosion of legalised gambling in the country.
