Dining out when you can't see the food on your plate is no easy feat, but it doesn't have to be impossible. Here's how people who are blind or have low vision are learning to dine with confidence.

Common challenges for vision impaired diners include reading menus, cutting food, locating items and pouring drinks.Dining out for blind or low vision people is a lot more complex than simply finding food on the plate.

"To help me navigate for the first maybe three or four times. By the fifth time, I know where to go after that," she said.Low vision refers to a loss of visual perception, affecting people who can't read at normal distances, even with glasses or contact lenses."I was very nervous about going out to dinner, because I was frightened," she said.Ms Matthews said as a rule, she uses a sighted person when she dines out.

"However, there are many tips and tricks, compensatory strategies, modifications, and low vision aids which can assist in overcoming these and other difficulties."Course participants are also encouraged to imagine their plate as a clock, so they can locate their food.
