Perth Zoo is undergoing a period of development with the departure of its elephants for a larger herd at Monarto Safari Park. This will make way for new attractions, including a gibbon run and an expanded African Savannah exhibit.
Perth Zoo will welcome two new rhinos this year as the departure of its beloved elephants paves the way for another round of development at the popular attraction. The zoo will be without elephants for the first time in decades when female Asian elephant Permai leaves this month for Monarto Safari Park in South Australia, with Putra Mas to follow later in the year.
The elephants' departure will trigger another round of development at the zoo, which is currently installing a gibbon run that will triple their habitat and allow patrons to walk beneath the primates as they enter the zoo. (Other new attractions at the zoo include a new cafe, a nature-based playground, a function centre and a new Parkland Heart precinct, featuring an arbour, barbecue area, extra seating and new event areas. The project will cost an estimated $30 million and take several years to complete. 'The African Savannah will take us a number of years — two to three years — to develop,' Mr van Ooran said. 'It's not cheap. Running a zoo … it's very complex, providing world-leading habitats and veterinary support to these really fascinating animals
