Victorian Liberal leader John Pesutto has refused to back the legalisation of nuclear power despite a push to do so from his own shadow cabinet.
Opposition Leader John Pesutto has refused to support legalising nuclear power in Victoria, a position which has come in conflict with a leaked shadow cabinet document put forward by his own energy spokesperson.
The leaked document, which appeared in the Herald Sun on Saturday, includes several pro-nuclear commitments, including to “work with a Federal Coalition Government to investigate the safety, viability and cost effectiveness of this option for Victoria" if Mr Dutton announces plans to investigate or implement nuclear energy.
“Our position on nuclear is that our focus is gas and the shortfalls in energy and wholesale energy price rises, which are adding to the cost of living woes,” Mr Pesutto said When Epstein followed up by asking Mr Pesutto whether he would move to legalise nuclear power if Peter Dutton wins the next election – noting there was a state law banning nuclear in Victoria – Mr Pesutto was evasive.
The ABC host asked again: “If Peter Dutton wins the next election… he will push for nuclear power, will you be then going to the next state election vowing to make nuclear power a legal possibility in Victoria?”
