More than four decades on, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are still making pop’s most transcendent music.
“Yes, I wanted to know about that, too,” says Tennant’s bandmate Chris Lowe, turning to him, arms folded. Fifteen albums in, haven’t they all been queer?
“No, not really,” he says. “But I wouldn’t describe George Michael as tortured, either. I mean, George became a real pin-up star, a sexy pop star, and he had to take on board all that went with that, and I think he probably found that a bit restricting. But he created that image and he went with it and it was very successful – and then he got fed up with it, I think. I don’t know if he was tortured about it, though.
“People who were in school in the ’80s,” adds Tennant. “What’s nice about those uses in the films, though, is that they’re part of the plot.is sort of their family bonding moment. Very often, people want to use Pet Shop Boys to establish an era, or a gay club in a certain era, which is a bit tedious.”
“I mean, where does it lead you, really?” Tennant scoffs. “In the ’90s, they used to get focus groups together before you had an album coming out to tell you what they thought about you, and it was always contradictory. We’d get told, ‘oh, they don’t like your white album covers because they think they’re boring’, and, ‘we showed them a picture of you wearing costumes and they don’t like it’.
