Peter Dutton and Sussan Ley are the new leadership team for the Liberal Party in opposition while the Nationals have chosen David Littleproud to lead them.

Peter Dutton has vowed to stay true to the Liberal Party’s values and present a suite of policies aimed at “the forgotten Australians in the suburbs” over the next three years as the new opposition leader.

“I want our country to support aspiration and reward hard work, take proper care of those Australians who short-term or long-term can’t take care of themselves. We have a rich and proud Indigenous heritage and a migrant story the envy of the world,” he said after the meeting. Earlier, Morrison, who held onto his seat of Cook, said the new leaders were “incredibly experienced, well versed, are deeply committed Australians to both the Liberal cause and the cause of the nation” and would do an outstanding job.

“We know that we didn’t receive the support of all women at the last election, and my message to the women of Australia is we hear you,” she said. The Nationals meeting to decide whether to keep Barnaby Joyce as leader started at 10am and only reached a decision after more than two hours.Littleproud told reporters it was the proudest day of his professional life.
