A separate flight from Perth to Pilbara, also courtesy of Hancock and declared in August 2022, was offered by the company to visit its mine site rather than being requested by Dutton, he claimed. Dutton told 2GB it was “appropriate” for him to attend the Bali memorial, and that “it was small-minded of the government at the time to not provide us with the transport option, given that there wasn’t a commercial option available”.
In his press conference, Dutton accused the prime minister’s office of “shopping around” criticism of his flights, calling the issue a “red herring”.
