We chat with Fairfax star peterkz about Benny's loss of clout in season 2 of the PrimeVideo series, gaining newfound respect for the writing process, and loving Monsta X:
Fairfax season 2 is on Prime Video, and romance is on the horizon for nearly every member of the Gang Gang. Not only that, but the animated satire is exploring the journey of four clout-chasing tweens with higher stakes than ever. With dueling fashion labels Off-Brian and Latrine in an all-out war, friendships are tested as each character takes a side.
In terms of Benny, how does the ever-growing beef between Brian and Hiroki affect him and the Gang Gang in season 2? I think the youth is so savvy, and they were even when I was young. I thought I was on the cusp of everything cool, and that just hasn't changed. Or at least I've always wanted to be. It's cool to see how that's evergreen.
I love how their friendship is a touchstone for the series. How does that friendship, and the various dynamics within it, evolve over the course of the season? Speaking of cool and humbling, the supporting and guest cast list is phenomenal. Obviously, the main cast is already great, but what is it like having Billy Porter as your hero? What is the experience of knowing your voice is going to be up there with his?
Peter S. Kim: I think Benny is the most pure of heart when it comes to that. He's still like the baby of the group, and he definitely has a will-they won't-they with a character from last season. They're kind of the Ross and Rachel, but in a twisted Fairfax Middle School way.
Obviously, you relate most to Benny as your character. But who outside of Benny do you connect with in the series? Peter S. Kim: The thing that really hit home for me was the episode of Fairfax Flea. That was such a cool moment, because one of the first places I went to when I moved to LA was the Fairfax flea market. My friends took me there, and it was just such a huge footprint of people who are just selling their wares and all the coolest, hottest people walking around. It really felt LA to me, and that episode really hit home.
I love that idea. Kpop for clout is really big right now. You did mention Monsta X first. Is that your favorite? When will Shownu return from war? Outside of Fairfax, what is on your plate? What are you working on, and what other genres would you like to explore?
