instead. The point being, you can spec-up an M3 to match the cost of an E 63 S - so which is better? The M3 took it by a gnat's johnson, but the E 63 S ran it so very, very close. And much like the RS3 versus A 45 debate, you could swap the winners around and make a very good argument as to why that decision should stand.
I was on that test and agreed with Matt Bird's choice of victor, but the E 63 S hung around for a week and, in that time, I clocked up many miles in it. All of them were superb. Okay, the gearbox isn't as good as the M3's and it doesn't have the exquisite body control either - but you'd need an M3 as a yardstick to know it. And the BMW doesn't have an engine that Klaus made, by hand - a bi-turbo 4.0-litre V8 producing 612hp screwed down with 627 lb ft at its crank.
Sure, it only has 10hp more than standard. Yet it also has four bucket seats and forged gold wheels. And a CFRP bonnet. And ceramic brakes. And most importantly it sits 7mm lower on a reworked chassis. Which doesn't sound revelatory, but the CS manages to ride better than a Competition while simultaneously seeming sharper corner to corner, and even more wieldy. Combine that with a better, bigger sounding 635hp 4.4-litre V8, and the recipe for specialness is inescapable.
Of course, BMW, never one to miss the opportunity for wildly pricing a good thing, decreed that the car would cost from £140k. And if that wasn't eye-watering enough, less than a year later the secondhand market has already worked its predictable charm - this one-owner example, with just 90 miles on the clock,Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio
It can feel like there's little left to say about the Giulia Quadrifoglio. It was fantastic in 2015, it's fantastic now, it's going to be fantastic for as long as we can drive 510hp, V6 cars. Alfa Romeo went from super saloon zero to hero in one car. If one of the established players had conjured up a fast four-door as good as this from all their years of trying, it would have been impressive. For Alfa to do so from a standing start was borderline miraculous.
