Maton struck his locker and suffered the injury following his final regular-season outing Oct. 5 against the Philadelphia Phillies. Maton collected one out while surrendering two earned runs and two hits — including“I was upset with how my outing went,” Maton said. “It was kind of a short-sighted move and, ultimately, it was selfish and it was one of those things that I hope doesn’t affect our team moving forward.
“Pretty much everything I can do right now is just try to recover and support the guys as much as I can,” Maton said.Maton said most of his frustration stemmed from “tossing away” a nice final month of the season with one poor outing. Maton sported a 4.35 ERA on Sept. 1, but shaved it to 3.58 with a string of 12 superb outings, thrusting himself back into contention for a postseason roster spot.
It all unraveled in what felt like a feel-good outing. Houston manager Dusty Baker acknowledged after the game that he and Phillies manager Rob Thomson concocted a plan for Phil and Nick to face each other in a major league game. Phil had thrown a scoreless inning two days earlier and lowered his ERA to 3.58. The brothers had never faced each other at any level and their first meeting brought players in both dugouts to the top step in anticipation.
