The number of people injured in Saskatoon traffic collisions spiked alarmingly in 2021, but city hall has been focused on one intersection. yxe skpoli

So it’s certainly worth asking whether Saskatoon is becoming a more dangerous place to drive. Yes, 2021 could be an outlier, but it’s mighty strange for collisions to remain relatively low and injuries to rise so sharply.

If the traffic engineers and so-called experts at city hall have been analyzing this data to try to explain the rise in injuries, they’ve been pretty quiet about it.to restrict traffic at one measly spot, the intersection at Clarence Avenue and Main Street.. This summer, barriers are scheduled to be installed that will prevent left turns from Main onto Clarence and stop traffic on Main from crossing Clarence.

Director of transportation Jay Magus struggled to provide a satisfactory answer to questions from his political masters at a council meeting last month about why this one intersection seems to be occupying so much of the time of the city’s bureaucrats. It seems far more likely that motorists will use the closer, narrower streets for access, and arguably engage in even more dangerous behaviour. City hall must monitor these collisions over the next few years, but don’t hold your breath.
