A hit-by-pitch led to a chaotic bench-clearing brawl that saw one coach punch another during a minor league game between the Yankees’ and Phillies’ Single-A affiliates.
It all started when Tampa Tarpons pitcher Alex Bustamante hit the Clearwater Thresher’s Erick Brito in the top of the third inning on a day when the Yankees affiliate’s pitchers were a little wild, according to minor league baseball reporter John Brophy, who captured it all on video. Thresher’s manager Marty Malloy, who was coaching third base, took issue with the plunking and was ejected from the game for arguing the intent of the hit batter as he walked his way down the baseline and George M. Steinbrenner Field as Lesley Gore’s “I’ll Cry If I Want To” played,
After a chat with the ump, Malloy made his way to the home plate area – with the Thresher’s bench already starting to empty out.John Brophy/YouTube When he got there, Malloy had word with Tarpons pitching coach Gerardo Casadiego — who was trying to push back his players — and threw a right-handed punch his way.Casadiego appeared to retaliate by taking a swipe at Malloy and then throwing a punch at another member of the threshers, who can be seen falling to the ground.Tarpons hitting coach Rick Guarno was also tackled to the ground.The melee resulted in numerous ejections and the game finally resumed after a 20 minutes delay.
