Residents have long been advocating for more local restaurants and retail options in the neighborhood of southwest Phoenix.

A Phoenix shopping center developer has plans to rehabilitate and reuse a historic farmhouse in Laveen as part of a new retail development that aims to bring large-scale retail, restaurants and entertainment uses to the area.

The land is mostly vacant except the nearly 100-year-old vacant farmhouse. As part of the development, called Laveen Towne Center, Vestar will rehabilitate the farmhouse and it will be used as a restaurant, potentially a wine bar, Thomas said. In a community meeting in December, Chris Mackay, economic development director for the city of Phoenix, said the restaurant that takes over the house will be called the Hudson, an homage to the Hudson Farm that was located at the site.

Laveen Towne Center will not be an elongated promenade like Desert Ridge Marketplace due to the size and shape of the site, Thomas said, but the area will include landscaped open space, sit-down restaurants and other community uses, like musical performances and public events. At the Phoenix City Council meeting January 4, the council unanimously approved a development agreement for public infrastructure improvements with Vestar for the project. The council agreed to reimburse up to $25 million to Vestar for public improvements over a 25-year period.
