The police offer three CommUNITY Tours per year in different parts of the city in an attempt to build connections with residents.

West Oakland residents were treated to free food and festivities Wednesday at DeFremery Park as part of the Oakland Police Department’s CommUNITY Tour.

“Public safety is our profession; however, community outreach is just as important. The majority of times officers interact with our community members is during emergency situations. Hosting events such as the CommUNITY Tour provides the opportunity for positive engagement, allowing our officers to build and strengthen long-lasting relationships with our community.

In the late 1960s, members the Black Panther Party held rallies and offered social services to residents. After Black Panther Bobby Hutton was killed by the Oakland police in 1968, the park was unofficially renamed Lil’ Bobby Hutton Memorial Park and still hosts an annual memorial celebration.
