The pickup hit two parked cars while crossing Main Street in Sparta, then flipped over and smashed into the front of Mavis Discount Tire, according to police.

A pickup truck driver towing an excavator on a flatbed trailer lost his brakes, flipped over and crashed into a tire store Tuesday night in Sussex County, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 9 p.m. when the brakes gave out as the driver traveled down Glen Road headed toward Main Street in Sparta, according to police. The pickup, which was pulling an excavator, struck two parked cars while crossing Main Street, then flipped over and smashed into the façade of Mavis Discount Tire at 84 Main Street, according to Sparta police Lt. John Lamon.

The driver, a 28-year-old man from North Arlington, was not hurt and no injuries were reported to anyone at the scene, Lamon said. The Sparta Building Department was called to check for damage to the building, he added. Lamon said the pickup truck and equipment involved in the crash were impounded and will be inspected before summonses are expected to be issued for motor-vehicle and driving violations.
