The clock is ticking for many residents who say they are living in fear of change

The small West Lancashire spot of Bickerstaffe had just over 1,180 residents at the last count, in a remote location on the Merseyside border. The area is home to rolling fields, cabbages, churches, primary schools, the odd pub and restaurant - and mile upon mile of fresh, flat windswept farmland.

She continued: “The company has just said, we’ve done this before, and it’s been accepted, so it’s fine, because nobody has been bothered to go against them before, or to critique it in much detail. One of the main points is that they base their evidence on municipal waste incinerators and not medical waste.

Similarly, Stephen Jones, who lives within a mile of the proposed site, told Lancs Live: “It scares me. If people understood what this thing does to nearby residents, there would be thousands opposing it; I don’t think people understand the harm that this thing can do. Meanwhile, his agent, Mr David Young,of Oaktree Environment Ltd, told the Committee that ‘residual elevated air emissions will be exhausted through the elevated flue, which will divert and disperse the emissions,’ and that a council review by professional air quality experts said the assessments were ‘robust,’ pointing to ‘several benefits’ to the proposal, including an ‘increase in sustainability of management of the local waste stream’ a ‘facility for the safe destruction of waste,’12 jobs...

These, according to the World Health Organisation, include ‘birth defects, ‘alteration in reproductive systems,’ ‘fewer male births,’ ‘suppression of the immune system,’ cancers like ‘chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, soft tissue sarcoma, non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, respiratory cancer, prostate cancer,’ ‘decreased fertility,’ ‘reduced size of genital organs,’ and ‘hormonal changes.’

They added, in a statement: “There is housing in the vicinity also, much of which is downwind of the prevailing wind, therefore the siting of the proposed incinerator is unsuitable with regard to air quality for people living there – those with asthma being at particular risk from both vehicle and incinerator exhaust fumes.”
