A 57-year-old man with terminal heart disease who made history as the first person to receive a genetically modified pig's heart has died in hospital.

David Bennett, a handyman from Hagerstown, Maryland, had been the first person in the world to be implanted with a genetically modified pig heart

Mr Bennett's son praised the hospital for offering the last-ditch experiment, saying the family hoped it would help further efforts to end an organ shortage. The surgery was among the first to demonstrate the feasibility of a pig-to-human heart transplant, a field made possible by new gene editing tools.

On December 31, the US Food and Drug Administration granted an emergency authorisation for the surgery in the hope of saving his life.
