A Queensland pilot created a festive spectacle by drawing a giant Christmas greeting in the sky above Toowoomba.

A Queensland pilot has delivered a special message to the aviation community, drawing a Christmas greeting in the skies above Toowoomba. Jake Naumann has been creating Christmas messages for the past two years and told 7 NEWS this was his biggest yet. He took off from Toowoomba Airport around 4pm on Sunday in VH-ZCT, an ex-military Pacific CT-4B Airtrainer, and spent around two hours in the sky drawing ‘Merry Christmas’, a star and bauble.

The flight path spanned around 40km and reached south to Nobby and west to near Pittsworth, south of Toowomba, and can be seen on flight tracking website, Flight Radar 24. “It was definitely for a bit of fun (and) it was well and truly planned in advance,” Jake said. “It actually took more planning than the length of the flight itself.” In previous years, Jake drew a star and Christmas tree north of Toowoomba, while for the birth of his daughter he created a pram to Toowoomba’s east. This year, he spent three to four hours planning his route and had to take into consideration the airspace restrictions, weather, wind and other traffic to avoid. “Another challenge is doing it in one line as well,” he said. “Obviously being a plane I can’t just stop and turn around. “The cursive font for Merry Christmas was definitely the go-to there.” Jake said while the flight was hard work, it was worth it in the end. “I thought this was a creative way to bring the community together and celebrate the holiday spirit and seeing everyone’s reaction makes it all worthwhile.
