Tonight's supermoon could be the largest for the year, with the moon about 10 per cent closer to earth than usual
We're still allowed to look out the window during isolation, and that's all you'll need to do this evening to gaze at what might be the year's biggest supermoon.
Tonight's so-called pink supermoon has already graced the northern hemisphere, where it has been reported as the largest of the year. When a full moon orbits within 10 per cent of its closest distance to Earth, it is considered a supermoon.Tonight's is referred to as a pink supermoon, but not because of its colour. The name originates from Native Americans because of the pink flowers that appeared in the east of North America at this time of year.
The moon has been in its full phase since about midday, but it will be most visible after sunset. The best views will be between 11pm and 4am. There's no need for a telescope. The only thing that may inhibit a clear view is cloud cover, but it's set to be a clear night. The Bureau of Meteorology says there will be minimal cloud in Melbourne and other central parts of the state tonight. It also might pay to be inland, as the moon is less visible from coastal areas.
