Rockies use 5-2 win to earn berth in City Championship game
Rockies player Cooper Beard finds himself tagged out at the plate as he was trying to increase the team's lead to 6-2 Tuesday night. But he and his teammates have a very important Saturday awaiting them after earning a berth in the City Championship title game.Should the Major Division Rockies watch their opponents score first in their next baseball game, they won’t be concerned.
That next game will be for all the marbles as manager Greg Humble’s club, now 3-0 for the tournament, has reserved a spot in the city championship contest on Saturday. The Yankees saw a two-game winning streak snapped as they now must face the Pirates in a now-or-never game Thursday night at 5:45.Back-to-back doubles by Decker Miller and Ty Evans in the second inning had given the Yankees a 2-0 advantage, but one inning later it had evaporated.
The contest took just an hour and 15 minutes to get all six innings in and that was due in part to Requena-Herrera not wasting any time between pitches. In fact, the home-plate umpire told him to slow down. His brother, Leo Requena-Herrera, was his catcher. Defensively for the Rockies, Donart at second base cleanly fielded two grounders in the late innings.
“That’s probably my best game. I just stayed focused. I found my spot on the rubber where I felt comfortable. The main pitch I threw was a two-seam along with a four-seam and a circle change,” Johnston said. “I hadn’t pitched in awhile. I was waiting for my opportunity to pitch.”
