As Texas politics heat up for midterms, activists court young voters
University of Houston student athlete Ike Ogbogu, right, partnered with NextGen America for a “speed dating for democracy” voter registration drive event on Sept. 20, 2022.When the youth engagement group MOVE Texas first formed at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2013, organizers had to resort to “carnival-esque” methods to attract attention to their cause.
But this week as the group courted UTSA students for National Voter Registration Day, all they needed were a couple boxes of Domino’s pizzas and a stockpile of frozen pop treats. It was one of dozens of similar registration drives hosted across Texas colleges and universities on Tuesday, as advocacy groups recruited young people to head to the polls this fall.
Cade McKnight sits with Deepika Chilukuri and Praveena Munnam, helping them to register to vote. McKnight was working with NextGen Texas to get students registered to vote at UTSA on National Voter Registration Day.
