Plan to poach overseas maths, science teachers faces delays as school strike looms | lucy_Carroll

NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell has urged her federal counterpart to fast-track visas for maths and science teachers, with a plan to poach overseas teachers so far failing to result in a single applicant hired.

In October, the department said its new teacher supply strategy would attract 3700 extra teachers over 10 years without a significant wage rise.About one in four public schools in NSW are expected to shut and at least half of all schools will face disruption as a result of the planned industrial action.

A department spokesperson said Mitchell had urged federal Education Minister Jason Clare “to look at options to fast track visa applications from overseas STEM teachers who want to immigrate to NSW and work in our schools”.“Similarly the NSW Department of Education is working with the Department of Home Affairs on this matter,” the spokesperson said.

Mitchell said the state government was offering the largest pay rises for the profession in the country and “engaging in fair, constructive and rational discussions with the union bosses is becoming increasingly difficult as they continue to push misinformation”.“The union bosses are engaged in what has become a purely political campaign. Spinning vacancy numbers and arguing over percentage points will not lift the profession, it only serves to distract and detract.

Members from 563 Catholic schools across NSW and ACT, which represent more than 18,000 teachers and support staff, voted to strike.
