Dallas Morning News EditorialSometimes an outsider can provide fresh insight, while at other moments, an insider who has volunteered within a school district can provide expertise and perspective.
School district involvement is a major plus, and we recommend Tarrah Lantz, a self-described PTA mom, for the Place 4 trustee seat on the Plano school board over Lydia Ortega, a retired economics professor, and Margaret Turner-Carrigan, a retired attorney and longtime Plano resident. Although Lantz, 44, is a first-time candidate for public office, she has served on the Plano ISD Council of PTAs and Plano ISD Education Foundation and on various school district committees. She said the district needs to reduce what she calls “forces intent of sowing distrust and division” in schools, a reference to divisive curriculum and cultural fights.
Lydia Ortega, 64, said she would support a statewide review of testing and said her experience in higher education at San Jose State University would benefit the Plano school district. However, she gives us no confidence that she would be a good board fit. Ortega ran unsuccessfully for Plano mayor in 2021 and for lieutenant governor in California in 2018, has shallow roots in the Plano education community and seems likely to stoke controversy about books on school shelves.
