Devonport City Council says a proposed $60 million multi-sport precinct will be a 'game changer' for the city, despite some local opposition. Public consultation for the project closes at the end of the week.
Devonport City Council has lodged a development application and opened public consultation for a long promised $ 60 million multi-sport precinct.
However, off the back of the Tasmanian JackJumpers' NBL success, the sport has seen a surge in popularity, and the Warriors have "well and truly reached capacity" at their home facility, club secretary Scott Russell said.A development application for the long-promised $60 million multi-sports precinct at Devonport Oval is open to public consultation until the end of the week.
"We started talking to all those different sporting organisations to see if we could make … a precinct that everybody can use," Devonport Council mayor Alison Jarman said. The advertised development will have six indoor mixed-use courts, including two show courts with a retractable seating capacity of 2,000, six outdoor courts, and a large function and events space.
The state and federal governments have both chipped in $25 million for the project, and the council's ratepayers will cover the $10 million shortfall. 'Save Our Bluff – No Stadium' signs are hung up on the front fences of several homes near the proposed development site, highlighting concerns about the development's impact on the nearby Mersey Bluff and foreshore area.
