Biotechnology company Colossal Biosciences says the Tasmanian tiger will return within the decade and it's laying the groundwork for the species' re-emergence.
A chance meeting has led the company that hopes to bring back thylacines to make a $US75,000 donation to a wildlife sanctuary in Tasmania.through a guest to the facility, who encouraged him to get in touch with biotechnology company Colossal Biosciences' co-founder Ben Lamm.
Mr Irons describes it as a partnership of possibilities where discoveries made by Colossal in pursuit of species de-extinction could have a positive impact on the work his sanctuary does to rehabilitate species."Things like developing artificial pouches, potentially for orphaned marsupials, and the research they're doing … that could be used for a variety of different projects.
"It's not just about the thylacine and its role , but about all of our native animals and how important they are," she said. Colossal said there was an ongoing discussion with various governments on the categorisation of the species. Colossal co-founder and CEO Ben Lamm said the teams were working closely with various levels of government to educate on advances in the sector to push for changed categories."The broad catch-all GMO definition worked 15 years ago, but it just doesn't work for all these cases today."
