The study was the first of its kind researching the presence of microplastics in high-altitude clouds.
annually, and the impacts of the waste are wide-ranging. It threatens marine life, ocean health, and human health and contributes to climate change. Plastic waste also leads to the creation of microplastics, the microscopic debris that is sourced from a range of synthetic materials, car tires and other everyday objects.
As plastic waste breaks down, the microplastics are released into the environment and wind up in oceans and even the clouds, according to a new study examining the path of airborne microplastics . The study was led by Hiroshi Okochi, a professor at Japan's Waseda University, and a group of researchers.
A volunteer collects plastic waste that washed up on the shores and mangroves of Freedom Island to mark International Coastal Clean-up Day on September 15, 2023, in Las Pinas, Metro Manila, Philippines. A new study found that microplastics are present in clouds, potentially leading to"plastic rainfall" contamination.in humans, potentially leading to cancer and damaging DNA.
Researchers collected cloud water from the summit and southeastern foothills of Mt. Fuji and the summit of Mt. Oyama to study the AMP presence in high-altitude clouds and the subsequent impacts on cloud formation and climate change. The research is believed to be the first of its kind to study the presence of microplastics in high-altitude clouds.
The study found that the AMPs in cloud water originated primarily from the ocean. Of the AMPs identified, there were nine different types of polymers and one type of rubber.

Plastic Rainfall: The Hidden Microplastics Clouding Our SkiesResearchers from Japan examine the presence of microplastics in cloud water and their contribution to climate change. Plastic particles less than 5 mm in size are called “microplastics.” These tiny bits of plastic are often found in industrial effluents, or form from the degradation of bulkier pl

Genetically engineered, plastic-eating bacteria can give waste a new lifeA group of synthetic bacteria that can efficiently turn plastic waste into useful chemicals is presented in Nature Communications. These bacteria could help to tackle the growing problem of plastic pollution and produce valuable chemicals and products—used in adhesives, insulators, and to make nylon, for example.
